As you go through life, people come and go. Some people stay forever and others last only a few months. I know there are people that make and keep friends forever, and some since elementary school, but that is not me. My life has taken some crazy turns and seen many changes throughout the years – kids, medical school, and moving across the country several times.
I have gained and lost many, many friends over the years but I am lucky enough now to have a small handful of friends that I would consider very close and best friends of mine. People that I would keep in touch with and plan visits to see if we or they ever moved away from where we are currently.
Making friends is kind of like dating… you realize quickly what you want in a friend and what you don't want. I have to say, that even though it's a little tougher to make friends when you're older, it's definitely much better because you know (and they know) what you are looking for in a friend.
While a couple of my friends are still single and kid-less, the majority of them are like-minded mommas like me. Currently my single, kid-less friends don't live anywhere near me but I do plan to meet up with them whenever I am close to where they are.
On the other hand, most of the friends I hang out with daily are mommas. Each of them has their hands full with work, kids, their hubby's, and whatever else they have going on. We do meet up regularly for wine and to let our kiddos play together but rarely do we get together, just us – sans kids – and have some downtime.
With best friend day coming up (on June 8th), I thought it would be a good idea to share a few things that I love to do to celebrate Best Friend Day with my girlfriends. However, you definitely don't need a certain day of the year to celebrate with your friends… you can celebrate any day of the year, a happy YOU day, with your best friends.
Start a BFF Tradition
Just like every year you have a tradition or something special you do for Mother's Day and Father's Day… start one with your BFF. Meet up for breakfast or coffee after you get all the kids to school. Or plan a babysitter and take a night on the town, just the two of you, and go to dinner and a movie.
Plan a Getaway
Make a yearly vacation date – head to Vegas for the weekend, book a staycation, do a spa day and relax by the pool, or go wine or brewery hopping and tasting.
Take a Day Off Together
Since most of my friends are busy mommas, it's easy to let quality time with friends to slip by the way-side. Play hookie for work or home duties and head off with your BFF for shopping and a pedicure, a glass of wine at your favorite winery, dinner and a movie, or even a picnic in the park. Find something that both of you enjoy and just make it happen without any distractions.
Binge on Chick Flicks
Send the hubby and kids out and meet at one of your homes. Grab your favorite Middle Sister Wine and girlie movies and binge watch over a bowl of buttery popcorn curled on the couch.
Middle Sister Wines are my favorite for girls nights with friends because they have a flavor and variety for everyone. Middle Sister wines were created 10 years ago by the founding women of the Wine Sisterhood. Founder Terry Wheatley was fascinated by her best friend’s middle daughter, Erin. From childhood, she was just more outrageous, more free-spirited and simply larger than life. Terry created Middle Sister wines for middle sisters everywhere, so they finally get the attention they deserve.
Give Her Some Face Time
If both of you are just too busy with family or work to spend the whole day together or you live too far away, you can still spend time with them. Take to Facebook or Instagram and post a little tribute to them. Or set up a Skype or FaceTime date and catch up over a glass of wine.
This year, Middle Sister wines turns 10! To help celebrate, they are hosting a monthly Kate Spade purse sweepstakes. Be sure to enter to win this month’s Middle Sister giveaway and remember to bring your favorite Middle Sister character along to all of your celebrations this year. Wines are available in stores across the U.S. and online. She’s never one to miss a party!
