When I first started blogging I had no idea that I blog could make money. I started blogging back in 2010 as a way to document and stay accountable to my fitness journey with losing the weight after having my first baby (even though it had been 3 years since I had said baby and I still hadn’t lost all the weight).

It served that purpose well and after a while I started to fall in love with blogging. I started to write more and more about my family and everyday life.

Then after moving across the country several times for my husband’s job, my career fell by the wayside and I needed to find a way to still be able to contribute to the household but while also caring for our daughter and other future kids.

Ways to Make Money Blogging

It was soon after that I realized that I could make money doing this thing people call blogging and I was sold. I poured hours upon hours into researching and finding all the ways that I could monetize my blog.

Now after several years, I’m fortunate enough to make a living doing what I have come to love while still being a stay-at-home mom of four kids. I can take the time off that I need when he has a day off (because it’s never on the weekend like a normal person) or when I need to just drop everything for a family emergency.

Blogging has been good to me and so I wanted to share all the ways that I have used to be able to monetize and make money.

Display Ads

Of all the ways to make money this one is the most passive. All you have to do is sign up with an advertising network and let them start serving ads on your website. The more people that view the blog, the more money I make. Easy peasy.

Now, there are a ton  of advertising companies out there but I personally use Mediavine and love them. They do all the dirty work for you, all you have to do is join their network. That’s it.

I wouldn’t really recommend any other network company as most of them have spammy ads or slow down your site tremendously. Both of which are terrible.

Unfortunately, you have to have at least 30,000 sessions per month to join them. So if you’re not quite there yet don’t sign up with another company in the meantime… just focus on creating quality content and any of the other ways listed here. Once you hit the big 30K, then you can signup.

Sponsored Blog Posts

Throughout 2016 and 2017, sponsored content accounted for more than 50% of my income. That number has changed now but sponsored blog work is a great way to make money with your blog whether it is still new or you have an established audience.

I wrote a post about some of the best networks to work with when it comes to sponsored posts but you can also reach out to brands that you love directly and work with them that way. Reaching out to brands is definitely more lucrative than working through a network but a network is easier to get posts with. So you have to pick your battles.

Just make sure you read the fine print when it comes to sponsored posts and how they handle copyright of your content.

Affiliate Income

There are a ton of different affiliate sites you can sign up with to start monetizing your content. Just make sure when you do that you’re not just placing links to place links. You need to truly recommend products and services that you, yourself use and love. Readers can smell the fakes.

Some of the affiliate networks I work with and recommend are:

I highly recommend Amazon to anyone and everyone because it doesn’t really matter what you blog about… I guarantee you can find a product that you recommend on Amazon.

Do some research on some of your favorite brands, also. Some of them offer their own affiliate networks to be a part of and you may even make more money. Score!

Sometimes it can take a while to start earning income through affiliate networks but once you do it can be a very lucrative revenue stream.

These are my three top and currently only ways I make money from my blog. Of course there is more than one way to skin a cat… as the saying goes… but I like to focus on what I’ve done and what works for me. Hopefully, it will work for you too and you won’t have to weed out the bad eggs from the good.

What are some of the ways you have found to make money from your blog?
